Yuedao Tech: 6 Key Energy-Saving Strategies for IDC Data Centers-PART 2

PART-2
IDC server room is a difficult place for energy saving. Servers with more and more processing power, more and more large-capacity data storage equipments and network equipments need to consume more electric power. And more and more integrated equipment, heat generation is more and more concentrated, resulting in the temperature control of the server room is a big problem. Only by researching new technologies and methods to reduce energy consumption in server rooms, and striving to improve server room cooling efficiency and reduce the overall energy consumption of IDC server rooms through rational selection of server racks, reasonable heat dissipation planning, and optimization of server room design, layout, and use, can we achieve the goal of energy conservation and emission reduction.
Reduce the redundancy of UPS and air conditioning is to seek the end, IDC server room carries the core data and key business. With the development and expansion of the enterprise, the need to process and store data geometrically; the emergence of new businesses, the need for more data processing equipment to support. Any failure of data processing and storage equipment will not only cause huge economic losses, but also affect the brand image of the enterprise. Data processing and storage equipment than the general equipment needs better power quality and temperature and humidity environment.
Power supply from the UPS single, 1 +1 parallel development to the current N + M parallel and double bus, power supply availability from a single 90% to 99.9999% of the double bus, and is moving in the direction of higher development. Higher power supply availability is not enough to be improved by technological advancement alone. The world's UPS industry 20 years of unremitting efforts, UPS stand-alone reliability has only increased from 90% to 98% or so. Higher power supply availability can only be guaranteed by more redundancy, and redundant UPS is bound to reduce the average load per UPS, reducing its operating efficiency, thereby increasing energy consumption.
But if you reduce UPS redundancy to reduce energy consumption needs to be more careful, if the availability of power supply systems or redundancy over the IDC room planning and design requirements, you can consider appropriate reduction; if the UPS power supply system has just reached or can not yet fully meet the IDC room power supply availability requirements, and then reduce the redundancy of the UPS to energy saving is to seek the end of the road, the loss does not outweigh the gain.
IDC server room equipment integration has increased the power of a single rack has increased dramatically. Desktop server rack power of 1.5kW, modular server rack power of 5kW, and now the latest blade server rack power up to 15kW. high power consumption, which inevitably produces high heat, so the IDC server room air conditioning demand has also increased dramatically.
In the era of desktop servers, because of the low unit power density, even if the air conditioning problems, the temperature of the server room will not quickly rise to the limit of the temperature, the maintenance staff have plenty of time to repair the air conditioning, so there is almost no air conditioning redundancy requirements. However, entering the era of modular servers, the requirement for air conditioner availability is different. With a short downtime or insufficient cooling capacity of the air conditioner, the temperature of the server room will quickly rise to the limit temperature. Once there was a server room, 3 air conditioners broke down 1, half an hour later the temperature of the server room to 40 ℃, all the servers alarm or even shutdown. Nowadays, with blade servers, the previous air conditioning cooling method can no longer effectively solve the heat problem in the rack. Therefore, to reduce the redundancy or configuration of air conditioning to achieve the goal of energy saving is also a great risk.
Therefore, the 6 principles listed in the previous section are not only applicable to the construction of new equipment room guidance, but also applicable to the guidance of energy-saving transformation of the old equipment room. The difference is that the new server room construction is drawing on a blank sheet of paper, you can fully apply the six principles; the old server room transformation is based on the existing facts, the reality of the situation does not allow to follow the gourd to draw a dipper, should be investigated first to clarify the specifics of the existing IDC server room, and then according to the six energy-saving principles of the development of targeted transformation programs.
