Cable heating is not a trivial matter —— On the popular science of cable heating

When the cable is powered on normally, the cable itself will generate a certain amount of heat, which is a normal phenomenon. However, due to some other special reasons, such as substandard cable quality, improper cable selection, and irregular installation and laying, there are great potential safety hazards.

01. Cause of cable overheating
The conductor resistance does not meet the standard requirements, which will cause the cable to generate heat in operation.

1. Improper cable selection leads to the conductor cross-section of the used cable being too small, resulting in overload during operation. After long-term use, the cable's heating and heat dissipation imbalance lead to heating.

2. When installing cables, the arrangement is too dense, the ventilation and heat dissipation effect is not good, or the cables are too close to other heat sources, which affects the normal heat dissipation of the cables, and causes the cables to generate heat during operation.

3. Poor joint manufacturing technology and tight crimping will lead to excessive contact resistance at the joint, which will also cause the cable to generate heat.

4. The poor insulation performance between cables leads to low insulation resistance, which will also generate heat during operation.

02. Harm of wire and cable overheating

After the cable is overheated, if the reason is not found and the fault is eliminated in time, insulation thermal aging will occur after the cable is powered on continuously, resulting in phase-to-phase short circuit tripping of the cable, which may seriously cause fire.

03. Preventive measures for cable overheating

1. According to all load sizes, make reasonable selection of cables.

2. Choose cable manufacturers with good brands and high credibility to ensure the quality of cables is qualified.

3. When installing and laying cables, ensure that the ventilation and heat dissipation effect of the cables is good.

4. The cable joint shall be compacted tightly to reduce the contact resistance at the joint and reduce the heat generation.
